High Quality Nursing & Care Home

High quality nursing and care home, has existing I.T. infrastructure but having a new wing was built to give a further 11 client rooms.

An ICT infrastructure was required to support PCs and printers for the nursing and admin staff. Additionally the care home clients and their families required wireless access so that they were able to communicate outside of normal visiting and also benefit from internet access. Additionally capability to provide phone lines to each individual client room as well as telephone extensions from the existing system for the nursing staff was required

A cabling specification was designed for the customer’s electrical contractor to install, this included links back to the existing main building. ITSS then terminated, tested and labelled the various outlets.

ITSS supplied a wiring rack, Draytek 2830 router, Draytek AP800 wireless access points and a power over Ethernet switch to power the access points, this then meant that 13 amp outlets were not required at the position where each access point was mounted.

The 4 Wireless access points were installed to ensure that there was full wireless coverage in all of the 11 bedrooms and the lounge area. For security reasons, this wireless network was separated from the “corporate” network by configuring and using a VLAN.

PCs and printers were supplied, installed and configured for the nursing staff to use.

Problem Small business with a 4 pc’s

Phase 1

To be able to share data securely and back data up. Needed an email solution to cater for a number of office based works and remote workers as well as a large number of email addresses for tutors. A backup solution was also required that encrypted data so that it could be securely stored off site. Additionally the client’s broadband was slow and the connection was frequently failing altogether.

SBS server, 3 new PCs, software rebuild of 1 existing PC, supply, configure and install webcams,  antivirus. A new Draytek router solved the broadband problems and a 16 port gigabit switch was used to provide a high speed network. The whole was powered via a suitable battery backup to protect the equipment from power failures and power surges.

Phase 2

Re-locate office to ground floor requiring cabling and provision of a new telephone system and then moving the server and PCs and setting it all up.

Small wiring rack and 12 cat5e outlets installed tested and labelled. A Draytek iPPBX 2820 Voice Over IP system was installed along with 7 Yealink VoiP telephones. Also as this was a ground floor office a security cage was supplied to house the server, this cage was firmly bolted in place.

Scenario Small Business

Small Business Server 2011 and Server 2008 R2 with 18 people using a mixture of PCs, laptops and mobile devices running Windows XP and Windows 7. The client also utilises Microsoft Office, Sage accounting software and CAD software.

Existing IT support was being provided but problems were not being resolved quickly and efficiently. Service levels had declined leaving the client feeling they were not getting value for money.

Initial site visit was made to assess the existing IT infrastructure and to discover the client’s needs and requirements.

A report was prepared with findings along with suggestions to improve the current situation and details were supplied for one of our support agreements.

Remedial action

Existing low cost PCs had reached their end of life thus negating the initial cost savings as these PCs need to be replaced with equipment that was more suited to business use.

The initial problems were quite quickly resolved by health checking each PC and server, many of the irritating problems they had been experiencing were in easily resolved by our highly trained and skilled technicians.

We are now in the second year of supporting this expanding company who are pleased that they can carry out their work without constant I.T. problems.
